Brussels prepares its most far-reaching sanctions package against Russia

European diplomatic chief Kaja Kallas announced on Monday, August 17, in the German daily Die Welt, plans to introduce the most extensive package of sanctions against Russia since the start of the war this fall. Once adopted, it would increase the total number of sanctioned Russian entities by about one-third, currently nearing 3,000 individuals and entities after 21 rounds of sanctions adopted by the European Union since February 2022. According to Kaja Kallas, existing sanctions have already deprived the Russian war machine of over 1,000 billion euros.

The package has not been drafted or voted on: Kaja Kallas did not specify a timeline or details, and any measure will require the unanimous approval of all 27 member states.
