This approach allows Moscow to criticise Western military action whilst avoiding direct escalation.

Russian media particularly emphasises alleged American 'war crimes', notably the strike on an Iranian school that killed 170 children and statements by Defence Secretary Hegseth regarding 'no quarter'. This emphasis serves a dual function: delegitimising Western military action and reinforcing Russia's position as a defender of international law, despite its own operations in Ukraine.

The treatment of regional tensions reveals a sophisticated narrative strategy. Incidents involving Russian allies such as Azerbaijan and Turkey are presented as external manipulations designed to divide the region's countries. Kadyrov even criticised Iranian strikes on the UAE, demonstrating that Russia prioritises its Gulf economic relationships over complete ideological solidarity with Tehran.
