ANALYSIS
Vilnius, October 8, 2026. Lithuanian media are treating the Christa Pike case as a story of survival and medical failure. Kauno diena recalls that the 50-year-old convict, sentenced to death for a murder committed as a teenager, received two supposedly lethal doses of pentobarbital in Tennessee, yet survived. Rushed to the hospital in an emergency, she spent several days there in critical condition, unconscious and on a respirator.
The newspaper relies heavily on her lawyer, Randy Spivey. He recounts that on Monday evening, the legal team thought she would suffer brain death and have her life support withdrawn the next day. "But on Tuesday, to everyone's surprise, Christa woke up and started talking," he says. According to the lawyers, she is conscious, speaks a little, but cannot swallow or move her arms, which are very swollen; Spivey judges her to be "angry and disoriented". His colleague Luke Ihnen states in court that the medical staff requested that her chains be removed, and the request was denied. An anesthesiologist hired by the defense told the BBC that she is no longer on a ventilator.
15min, on the other hand, presents an explanatory article on how she survived and what awaits her. It recalls that the sentence was pronounced for the murder, in 1995, of a 19-year-old woman she met at a camp for troubled teenagers. Governor Bill Lee ordered an independent investigation into the events of September 30 in Nashville and suspended all executions in the state until the end of the year.
Kauno diena also places the case in a series: one week after the attempt on Pike, Texas executed a 46-year-old man by lethal injection, showing that the procedure continues elsewhere in the United States. The two titles barely touch on the law in Tennessee, the request for commutation to life imprisonment, or the position of the victim's family; the focus is on the failure of the injection and the physical condition of the convict.
