The US State Department sanctioned the president of the International Criminal Court, Japanese judge Tomoko Akane, and Senegalese deputy prosecutor Abdoulaye Seye on 18 August 2026. The measures freeze their US assets. Secretary of State Marco Rubio justified the move by calling the court "corrupt and deeply politicized". The ICC denounced a "flagrant attack on the independence of an impartial judicial institution". Nine of its eighteen judges are now under US sanctions.
