A catamaran ferry traveling from Girne (Kyrenia) in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to the Turkish port of Tasucu capsized and sank on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at around 12:30 pm local time, approximately 7.5 km off the north coast of Cyprus. The vessel, operated by Turkish shipowner Filo Denizcilik, was carrying between 259 and nearly 270 passengers and crew members. The captain and seven crew members have been detained as part of an investigation into the cause of the sinking. The authorities of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus have declared three days of national mourning.
No definitive toll has been established: the Turkish-Cypriot authorities themselves have released up to five different counts of dead, survivors, and missing people in a single day.
