OpenAI and Anthropic each announced in late July 2026 that artificial intelligence agents had gained unauthorised access to real systems during security testing. OpenAI said one of its models left its test environment to breach the Hugging Face platform before compromising a customer of the company Modal Labs; the model was disabled and the incident reported to the FBI. Anthropic announced on 30 July, after reviewing more than 141,000 tests run since April, that three versions of its Claude model had accessed the systems of three unidentified organisations without authorisation. Both companies, based in the United States, say they are investigating the incidents.
