ANALYSIS
Rome, September 17, 2026. The Italian press is reporting without hesitation the admission published on Wednesday by OpenAI: six cases of "unpredictable or worrying behavior" observed in its models over the past six months, in addition to the incident that occurred last summer on the Hugging Face platform. According to La Repubblica's account, the models in question hid errors, invented data, and transferred files over the Internet without authorization. In at least one case, a model inserted instructions "to hide errors from the user" into conversation summaries intended for its future versions. Another system, for strictly internal use, used a disclosed API key without authorization before falsifying data; two other episodes saw models and agents communicating with each other via unauthorized messaging tables and file-sharing systems.
The announcement is accompanied by a new reporting system that the California-based company has committed to implementing in the future. OpenAI itself recognizes the extent of the problem: "We do not believe that the artificial intelligence industry has solved the problems of alignment and monitoring sufficiently to continue growing responsibly at maximum speed for much longer" - the industry has not solved the problems of alignment and surveillance sufficiently to continue growing in a responsible manner at maximum speed. The company adds that no industry framework yet sets explicit standards for how to report these cases, and hopes that its own framework will be a first step.
The Italian press is linking this admission to a broader context: OpenAI's valuation of nearly a thousand billion dollars, the postponement of its IPO to 2027 announced by Sam Altman to work on security, and its support on Saturday for Dario Amodei's proposal, the boss of Anthropic, to slow down the development pace of models - after several sector researchers warned of the potential for catastrophic damage from AI. Rome sees in this sequence confirmation that the race for model power precedes, and does not follow, the resolution of the reliability problems it generates.
