A tourist helicopter crashed on 19 August 2026 near Mount Ololokwe in Kenya's Samburu County, some 250 kilometres north of Nairobi. All seven people on board were killed: Michele Sensi-Contugi, 44, head of Ecuador's intelligence service, his wife Stephany Hollihan Vásconez, five US citizens and the pilot. The aircraft, a Eurocopter EC130 B4 operated by Lady Lori Kenya, was flying from the Loisaba reserve to Ewaso Nyiro. Kenya's civil aviation authority has opened an investigation; Quito has declared three days of national mourning.
Michele Sensi-Contugi had led Ecuador's national intelligence centre since 2024 and was close to President Noboa.
Ecuador has no diplomatic mission in Kenya, which complicates the repatriation of the bodies.
