On Monday, September 7, 2026, in the evening, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, without caption or explanation, a map of North and Central America where Canada, Mexico, Greenland, Iceland, Central America, and the Caribbean appear colored with the colors of the American flag, the whole being labeled "United States of America". The post is part of a series of about a hundred messages posted on Truth Social during the American Labor Day weekend. Icelandic Minister of Foreign Affairs Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir summoned US Ambassador Billy Long, who has been in office in Reykjavik for the past month, to inform him that the image was totally inappropriate.
No official claim has been made by Washington; the State Department and the concerned American embassies have not responded to requests.
In January, a candidate for the post, he had joked about an Iceland as the "52nd American State", with him as governor.
Claudia Sheinbaum responded that Mexico was "neither a colony nor a protectorate" of a foreign country.
Martinique, Guadeloupe, Saint-Martin, Saint-Barthélemy, and Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon are also on the map.
