On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, the plane carrying Volodymyr Zelensky to Oslo for the funeral of King Harald V took off from Chisinau, Moldova, with a delay after a drone was detected. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stated on Wednesday to the NRK channel that the aircraft had "almost been hit" by the drone. The Moldovan authorities temporarily closed their airspace and reported the drone crashing in the Rîșcani district, about 160 km from Chisinau airport. A drone also entered Romanian airspace before leaving. On Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov claimed that no threat had targeted the plane.
The accounts differ on the extent of the danger: Oslo mentions a near-impact, while Kiev, Chisinau, and Moscow downplay or deny the reality of it.
A source from the presidency describes as "exaggerated" the extent of the risk described by Oslo.
Secretary of State Bhanuja Rasiah acknowledged being unaware of the exact distance between the drones and the plane.
Three departing flights and four arriving flights in Chisinau were delayed due to the drone alert.
