MONACO BOMBING: INTERPOL HUNTS A UKRAINIAN SUSPECT
France is examining its own geographical involvement: the attack in Monaco occurred just steps from the French border, the suspect fled through French territory, and Franco-Monegasque police cooperation was crucial in identifying Anastasiia Berezovska in under 53 hours.

Paris, July 3, 2026. Three days after a package bomb exploded in the lobby of a building in the Principality, Interpol issued a "red notice" against Anastasiia Berezovska, a 39-year-old Ukrainian woman whose last known residence is in Germany. This national is wanted for "attempted murder, depositing an explosive device on a public road with criminal intent, and criminal association."
The target of the attack is Vadim Ermolaev, a 58-year-old Ukrainian oligarch of Cypriot nationality, a resident of Monaco. On the evening of Monday, June 29, he was returning home with his partner and 13-year-old son when an explosive device hidden in a package triggered a violent blast in the lobby of their building. One of the victims' lives is at risk, according to General Prosecutor Stéphane Thibault. The building is located in a neighborhood directly adjacent to French territory.
The suspect's profile is precise. A brunette with medium-length hair, she was wearing a short-sleeved sailor shirt in Interpol photos, with a tattoo "possibly a snake" on her right arm. In surveillance footage, she was "disguised as a man," her face hidden under a black bob. Deputy Prosecutor Morgan Raymond stated that she had conducted "several reconnaissance missions" on June 26, 27, and 28, surveilling her targets from a bench near the building.
The suspect is believed to have had accomplices. "Two male individuals have been detained," the deputy prosecutor said, although the investigation has not established their "active participation." After the explosion, she fled through France and then Italy in a rental car. Her German home was searched on Friday.
The investigation has been assigned to three instructing judges for attempted murder. Thibault praised "effective international police and judicial cooperation," which enabled the suspect's identification in "a particularly short time" - 53 hours. The geographical proximity to France, through which the suspect transited, gives this case a direct national dimension.
The case occurs in the context of tensions related to the Russian-Ukrainian war. Ermolaev, described as a businessman with interests linked to the Russian sphere and subject to sanctions, represented a high-value symbolic target in a principality of 2 km² that had been spared this type of violence until now.
France's geographic focus is centered on the country's proximity to the border and the suspect's escape through French territory, with a strong emphasis on the national implications.
The French government's perspective relies heavily on institutional sources, with coverage largely based on statements from the Monaco prosecutor's office and few alternative voices cited.
The geopolitical context is barely explored, with only brief mentions of the target's connections to the Russian-Ukrainian war, lacking in-depth analysis.
