AFD CONGRESS IN ERFURT: GERMANY TAKES TO THE STREETS AGAINST THE FAR RIGHT
Warsaw assesses AfD's surge: 30,000 protesters in Erfurt failed to prevent the congress from proceeding on schedule, while the party openly proclaims ambitions to govern alone in eastern Länder.

Warsaw, July 5, 2026. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) federal congress in Erfurt on July 4-5 has received sustained attention from Polish media. As Germany's direct neighbor and principal commercial partner, Poland closely monitors any resurgence of far-right politics among its main trading partner. Two opposing images structured the coverage: a city besieged by tens of thousands of protesters, and a party openly declaring its ambitions for regional power.\n\nAccording to Gazeta Prawna, more than 30,000 people converged on Erfurt seeking to block access to the congress center. The organization Widersetzen coordinated major actions on highway A71 and roads B4 and B7: more than 500 protesters occupied the A71 roadway, others rappelled from bridges using ropes, some glued themselves to tram tracks near Gothaer Platz, paralyzing urban traffic. Police deployed pepper spray to disperse demonstrators, and journalists covering events sustained injuries during the confrontations.\n\nDespite this large-scale mobilization, the congress began on schedule. Dziennik.pl reports that by 5 a.m., approximately 540 of the roughly 600 authorized delegates were present at the site, with some having spent the night at a hotel adjacent to the Messe. The mayor of Erfurt, Andreas Horn, had characterized the situation as "an emergency of a scale Erfurt had never experienced."\n\nOn the AfD side, co-chair Tino Chrupalla opened proceedings with an assertive tone. "Perhaps we will soon be able to govern alone," he told delegates, referring directly to regional elections scheduled for September 2026 in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, two Länder where the AfD leads polling. Criticizing his opponents, Chrupalla also stated that "those who rise early are rewarded by God," adding that "Antifa agitators had slept too long to disrupt the congress."\n\nPolish media emphasizes the diversity of mobilized opposition: unions, feminist and socialist organizations, as well as representatives from the SPD, Greens, and Left parties. This cross-party coalition is presented as reflecting deep social rejection—though nothing ultimately prevented the congress from proceeding. For Warsaw, the rise of a nationalist and EU-skeptic party in its foremost commercial partner represents a signal that Polish media cannot overlook.
Security-framed dominance: coverage emphasizes violence and traffic blockades more prominently than the political demands and organizations behind the protests
Preference for highest casualty figures: Gazeta Prawna reports 30,000 protesters, a figure exceeding the dpa estimate of 20,000 cited by Dziennik.pl
Limited contextualization of AfD positions on Poland and the EU: the party's regional ambitions are reported without substantive analysis of implications for bilateral relations
