TOXIC SMOKE FROM CANADIAN WILDFIRES CHOKES TORONTO AND US CITIES — REPUBLICANS BLAME CANADA
Canada shifts the blame for climate responsibility to the US capital while battling hundreds of uncontrolled wildfires in Ontario that have plunged Toronto into the most polluted air worldwide.

Toronto, July 18, 2026. As smoke from wildfires in northwest Ontario continues to choke the southern part of the province, Canada is facing a wave of accusations from the US Congress. According to IQAir, a Swiss company specializing in air quality measurement, Toronto posted an index of 192 on Wednesday, the worst air quality recorded among major cities worldwide, ahead of Kinshasa, Lahore, and Delhi. On Thursday, only Detroit surpassed Toronto, with the air being described as "dangerous" by the same platform.
On the ground, Environment Canada reported 148 active fires in northwest Ontario, including 69 that were out of control, a number reduced to 129 on Friday, with 62 still uncontrolled. Several communities have been evacuated, including Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, and Lac des Mille Lacs. A fire destroyed homes in Namaygoosisagagun (Collins First Nation), north of Thunder Bay. Ontario Premier Doug Ford assured that "teams are working tirelessly" and that the province "will spare no expense" to protect the population.
South of the border, the tone has escalated. Four Republican lawmakers from Michigan, including John James and Lisa McClain, sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney denouncing a "third consecutive year" of unresolved cross-border crisis. Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno promised to introduce a bill to "sanction Canada". Donald Trump himself announced plans to add the cost of this pollution to the tariffs imposed on Ottawa, citing "willful negligence".
Questioned in London, Ontario, Mark Carney deflected the criticism, noting that "fighting climate change is the responsibility of all countries, including the United States", while the US is "actively working against clean energy". The severe weather has also forced the cancellation of outdoor events, including the FIFA Fan Festival evening in Toronto and the Rock the Park festival in London. Environment Canada is predicting a possible temporary improvement before a return to "very unhealthy" air by the weekend.

Preference for official voices (Environment Canada, Doug Ford, Mark Carney) over direct testimony from evacuated Indigenous communities
