WILDFIRES SPREAD ACROSS EUROPE: OVER 200,000 EVACUATED, BORDEAUX THREATENED, BLAZES NEAR MADRID

Athens, July 25, 2026. Greece is assessing the threat moving towards it from the west of the continent. The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has placed Attica, Evia, and Rhodes on red alert, category 4 risk, for Thursday. The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has ordered the full mobilization of the National Civil Protection Mechanism and reminded citizens to avoid any risky behavior, relying on the 112 emergency line.
This preventive reflex is explained by the experience of European neighbors. In Gironde, near Bordeaux, a fire that started at a clearing site has already consumed 19,000 hectares and around 100 buildings; according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, cited by To Vima, approximately 110,000 people have been evacuated, a figure that rose to 140,000 according to Naftemporiki, adding the entire southwest. President Emmanuel Macron has asked the armies to "provide the widest possible support" to civil security in a situation he considers "unprecedented". Two firefighters have died near Mérignac; two men have been charged with smoking in the forest, one after a campfire was left burning.
In Spain, the situation is no better. "At this moment, it is clear that the fire is at its peak, it is impossible for us to extinguish it," acknowledged Carlos Novillo, head of rescue operations in the Madrid region, cited by Protothema. Around 40,000 people have been evacuated or confined around the Spanish capital, where a national state of emergency has been declared, as well as in the province of Ávila. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was scheduled to visit the Cenicientos front on Friday. Further north, the Guadalajara fire, which has ravaged 32,000 hectares in a week, shows signs of stabilization, while another fire, earlier this month in the south of the country, killed 13 people, the deadliest in recent Spanish history.
The aggregated figures from the European Commission, relayed by Protothema, place 2026 as the second-worst year in terms of burned area in the EU in the past twenty years: 1,254 fires recorded, 254,388 hectares burned, 8.31 million tons of CO2 released. For Greece, which is accustomed to fiery summers, this spring of flames in its neighboring countries confirms a continental reading of the risk, rather than a strictly national one.
