On 8 August 2026, FIFA issued a statement denouncing a "concerted and ongoing effort" by some to weaken the organisation and its president, Gianni Infantino. The previous day, the British newspaper The Telegraph had reported favouritism allegations against Infantino, UEFA general secretary from 2009 to 2016, involving an employee with whom he was said to have had a relationship. UEFA confirmed that a severance payment had been made to that former staff member, including the cost of an MBA. Infantino called the allegations "categorically false" and "defamatory".
