The German government is closely following the developments surrounding the deadly incident in the village of Tell, in the occupied West Bank, where seven people lost their lives on Friday. According to the public broadcaster Tagesschau, four Palestinians were killed south of Nablus, and four others were injured, while an armed Israeli settler also died. The accounts of the incident differ: the army mentions a group of "hikers" being attacked, an explanation contradicted by Palestinian testimonies, which claim that settlers first attacked two buildings before the residents retaliated. A video circulating on social media shows an armed altercation, an Israeli soldier present at the scene, and then intense gunfire from soldiers and settlers towards the Palestinians.

At the hospital in Nablus, a scene reported by Tagesschau illustrates the mourning: a young woman crying over her father, who was killed and lying on a stretcher. Witness Khaled Abed told the ARD studio in Tel Aviv: "The occupation troops are deployed throughout the area and have blocked the entrances to the village."

The German media views the Israeli political reaction as severe. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called for the villages to be "cleansed of terrorists." After consulting with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, not Israel Katz, and other officials, including Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and intelligence chief David Zini, Benjamin Netanyahu announced the demolition of the home of a Palestinian "terrorist," "tough measures" in villages deemed "terrorist hubs" - including confiscation of arms and withdrawal of work permits - and an increased military presence. As noted by ZEIT Online, this also includes the acceleration of the legalization of existing outposts and the creation of new settler outposts.

The German press links this announcement to the electoral calendar: the upcoming legislative elections in Israel, scheduled for late October, have placed security at the center of the campaign. ZEIT recalls that around 1,100 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since October 7, 2023, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, while the violence of radical settlers has also intensified. Ramallah condemns an escalation of "settler terrorism," a direct consequence, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, of the protection and political support enjoyed by its perpetrators, in near impunity.
