RUSSIA PERSPECTIVE

Russian state media outlets RT and TASS construct a coherent narrative presenting Ukraine as a destabilising and aggressive actor in international relations. Emphasis is placed on Ukrainian threats against European leaders (Orbán), alleged corruption (money and gold shipments), and obstruction in energy negotiations. This framing aims to delegitimise Kyiv as a reliable partner for Europe, particularly among allies like Hungary that maintain more balanced positions on the conflict.

The tone adopted is accusatory and alarmist regarding Ukraine, but factual and measured on energy matters involving partners such as India and Romania. Russian media systematically amplify Western criticisms of American policies (Australian senator criticising alignment with Trump) to reinforce the narrative of a divided West and contested American hegemony even among its own allies.

The omissions are telling: no discussion of the geopolitical rationale behind Ukrainian positions, no analysis of humanitarian impacts from energy disruptions, and complete absence of context regarding Russian military action that motivates Ukrainian responses. Western sanctions against Russian companies like Lukoil are presented solely through the lens of difficulties created for European countries.

The narrative framework clearly positions Russia as a stable and dependable energy supplier (serving India), contrasted with Ukraine presented as chaotic and threatening, and the West as hypocritical and divided. This media construction aligns with Russian strategic interests by indirectly justifying military intervention whilst portraying Moscow as a predictable partner for emerging non-Western powers.
