Tehran remembers the late Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani as a regional mediator, more so than the figure of the deceased emir himself.

Tehran, July 13, 2026. The passing of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani at 74 is being received in Iran primarily through a diplomatic lens. President Massoud Pezeshkian has sent a condolence message to the current emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, praising the "significant role" his father played "in strengthening fraternal relations and friendly cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the State of Qatar." According to Mehr News agency, Pezeshkian assured that "his services will always be remembered with respect in the memory of the two nations," before praying for God to grant mercy to the deceased and patience to his family.
Sheikh Hamad had led Qatar from 1995 to 2013, before handing over power to his son. For Tehran, this tribute is part of a regional partnership considered strategic: Doha has multiplied mediation efforts between Iran and the United States in recent months. A diplomatic source cited by Mehr News indicates that Qatari emissaries visited Iran "with American coordination" to try to ease tensions and pave the way for new negotiations. Tehran clarifies that it did not request talks with the United States but received the Qatari envoy "as part of a responsible approach."
The Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, also emphasized, during an interview with his Egyptian counterpart, the need for all parties to engage in negotiations and implement the memorandum of understanding concluded between the United States and Iran, while stressing the importance of guaranteeing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. A phone call between the Qatari emir and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, reported by Asr Iran, similarly highlighted the need to continue discussions between Tehran and the United States, with Islamabad reaffirming its full support for Doha "in light of current regional developments."
In this context, the death of Sheikh Hamad is presented by Iranian media less as a biographical event than as a reminder of a diplomatic legacy: that of a Qatar consistently playing the role of regional intermediary between Tehran, the United States, and neighboring Arab capitals.
Official diplomatic framing: the focus is on institutional condolence messages rather than the biography or domestic political legacy of the late emir, as seen from Tehran's perspective
Iran's government prefers to highlight Qatar's mediator role in the file of tensions with the United States, to the detriment of other aspects of Sheikh Hamad's regional legacy
Low coverage of reactions from Iranian civil society or opposition to the passing of the former emir, a development being closely watched in Tehran
