Brussels, September 16, 2026. The Belgian press first notes a disturbing figure: the drone shot down in the night from Monday to Tuesday over Lithuania was carrying explosives. According to La Libre Belgique, Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas specified on Tuesday that the charge had been defused by special forces, with the device still "under examination and analysis". It was destroyed by Italian Eurofighter fighter jets, engaged in NATO's air policing mission, shortly after midnight near the village of Pratkūnai.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda announced the destruction of the drone as early as Tuesday morning, thanking on X the "allied personnel for their rapid response" and emphasizing that "with our NATO allies, Lithuania will defend its airspace". Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys added that "NATO remains vigilant, engaged and ready". The two dispatches, reported by DH and La Libre, rely almost exclusively on these official communications released on social media, without independent confirmation at this stage regarding the exact origin of the device.
According to public radio LRT, cited by the two titles, the drone came from Belarus and was heading west; Lithuanian authorities initially mentioned a crash near Kaunas Lake before the location was specified to the village of Pratkūnai. Lithuania, which borders both the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus, says it fears Russian targeting of critical infrastructure in the Baltic countries.
