The Indonesian press is reporting on a dispatch from AFP relayed by DW: on the night of Monday, September 14, to Tuesday, September 15, 2026, NATO fighter jets shot down a drone over Lithuania, between Vilnius and Kaunas. According to the National Crisis Management Center (NKVC), the device "most likely" came from Belarus and was flying west when it was destroyed by an Italian plane. The debris fell in a rural area near the village of Pratkūnai, about 80 kilometers west of Vilnius and not far from Kaunas, the country's second city. Images released by the Lithuanian army show scattered fragments, some wooden, others charred.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda thanked the Alliance for its "rapid response": "With Russia intensifying its aggression against Ukraine, such availability is vital for our region," he wrote, quoted by CNN Indonesia. The head of Lithuanian diplomacy, Kęstutis Budrys, praised allies "whose presence helps protect our airspace" and sees it as "the best demonstration of unity and firmness of the Allies in action". The commander of the Lithuanian Air Force, Antanas Matutis, specified that the drone was "probably" carrying explosives.
CNN Indonesia recalls that Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, NATO members sharing a long border with Russia, have regularly reported violations of their airspace by drones since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The Indonesian media also notes that Poland has announced the launch of "air operations" on its territory, motivated by "the activity of unmanned jet-powered aircraft from the Russian Federation" targeting Ukraine, a measure described as "preemptive".
None of the articles consulted in Jakarta mention, at this stage, the separate incident involving a Russian frigate and a Danish helicopter off Gedser: Indonesian coverage focuses on the Lithuanian episode, presented as the first downing of a drone in this airspace and as a further sign of the growing tension on NATO's eastern border.
