ANALYSIS
Accra, October 7, 2026. Ghanaian media are treating the finalization of the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount Skydance as an event that is first and foremost financial and industrial. MyJoyOnline and GBC Ghana Online published, a few hours apart and under the same title, a text from the BBC: "Paramount takes over Warner Bros in $110bn Hollywood merger". GBC explicitly indicates "Source: BBC".
The story opens with the amount, $110 billion, and the merger of "two of the largest studios in Los Angeles". It specifies that the operation comes after "months of legal disputes" and in the face of widespread criticism: opponents fear job losses and believe that consolidation could harm competition and consumers. The text announces that the merger "will change streaming for millions of people" and leaves CNN, one of the main American news media, "in uncertain territory".
The articles then list the scope of the new group: HBO, CBS, Nickelodeon, Showtime, Comedy Central, DC Studios, and Food Network. Paramount inherits franchises like Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and The Lord of the Rings, which add to Indiana Jones, Mission: Impossible, and Shrek. The entire entity will be renamed Skydance Corporation, after the company founded by David Ellison before he took control of Paramount and then Warner Bros. Discovery.
The floor is given to David Ellison, president and CEO, who judges the completion of the agreement "historic" for the film industry. He says he wanted, from the start, to "create a stronger competitor", equipped with the talents, resources, and reach necessary to tell stories "on all platforms". Donald Trump, questioned after the finalization, describes the agreement as "great": "These are tremendous people and it will be a great company". MyJoyOnline adds that Ellison appointed Ynon Kreiz, former boss of Mattel, as co-CEO last week.
Ghanaian coverage remains factual and takes up the framing of the British agency. It does not develop the local consequences, whether in terms of access to catalogs or subscriptions in Ghana, and does not quote any analysts or African voices. The issue is presented as a matter of a balance of power between American entertainment giants, seen from afar, with competition and the fate of CNN as the main questions.
