Russia's independent press reported on Monday, September 14, 2026, the revelation by the American investigative organization ProPublica: Umar Kremlev, a Russian businessman and president of the International Boxing Association (IBA), funded part of the wedding celebrations of Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of the American president, in May in the Bahamas. According to Meduza, which cites documents and three sources from ProPublica, Kremlev paid "hundreds of thousands of dollars", including around $100,000 for the rental of a private island and $70,000 for a fireworks display, on the first evening of the three-day celebrations. The funds were channeled through IB Challenger, a Dubai-based structure used by Kremlev to manage IBA operations after they were relocated from Switzerland following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Moscow Times specifies.
Kremlev is targeted by Ukrainian sanctions due to his ties with Vladimir Putin, established through Alexei Rubezhny, the head of the Russian president's personal security service. National security experts cited by ProPublica find it concerning that a member of Putin's inner circle gained such intimate access to the Trump family by funding the wedding of his son. "If I pay for your wedding, at some point, you'll owe me something. This should be unthinkable for the son of the president," said Frank Montoya Jr., a former high-ranking counterintelligence official at the FBI.
Kremlev's press office claims that he and Trump Jr. met "a few years ago" and have since maintained a "friendly relationship". A spokesperson for Trump Jr. describes him as a "personal friend", met through a mutual friend who is a hunting enthusiast, without disputing the payments. Meduza notes that the ceremony, presented as a gathering of "only close friends" (around 50 guests), included an unusual group of Russian-speaking guests, while former friends of Trump Jr. were not invited — and the American president, who was in Washington at the time, was absent. The media outlet also recalls that Trump Jr.'s fortune is estimated at $300 million by Forbes, which could have allowed him to fund the event himself. The IBA denies having incurred any expenses for the wedding, without commenting on IB Challenger's payments. Eric Trump's entourage claims to have "never heard" of Kremlev.
