The Ukrainian press is reporting without hesitation on the ProPublica investigation revealing that Russian businessman Umar Kremlev financed part of the wedding celebrations of Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of the American president, in the Bahamas. Kremlev paid for the rental of a private island, which cost around $100,000 per day, as well as a fireworks display worth around $70,000, via the Dubai-based company IB Challenger, linked to the International Boxing Association (IBA) which he has headed since 2020. The private ceremony brought together 18 guests, while around 50 people participated in the three days of celebrations, including Eric Trump and Jared Kushner. President Donald Trump did not attend either of the two evenings, held back in Washington by discussions on the war in Iran, according to Kyiv Post.
Donald Trump Jr. and his wife Bettina Anderson confirmed on Monday, on Instagram, that their "dear friend" had "very generously organized two incredible evenings", describing the gesture as an "extraordinarily generous wedding gift". A spokesperson did not deny the financing but emphasized the absence of business relationships between the two men.
Kyiv recalls that Kremlev is no stranger to its services: Ukraine has placed him under sanctions, citing his links to Vladimir Putin and the Russian secret services. In April 2026, Putin himself awarded him the "Order of Friendship", praising the IBA's resilience "despite political pressure". The organization, once funded by the gas giant Gazprom, has also been cut off from the International Olympic Committee after repeated warnings about its financial and ethical governance.
The Ukrainian press also notes that Trump Jr. had already shared the stage with Kremlev in September 2025, during an IBA conference in Istanbul. For Kyiv, the episode illustrates the ease with which the money of a Kremlin insider circulates right into the direct entourage of the American presidential family, even as Washington negotiates with Moscow and Kyiv the terms of a possible end to the war. No Ukrainian official has publicly commented on the matter at this stage, but the connection between national sanctions and American presidential hospitality is already fueling comments.
