Sydney, July 15, 2026. The Australian press is providing detailed coverage of the death of a 26-year-old Colombian migrant, who was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on Monday in Biddeford, Maine, sparking spontaneous protests. This is the second such incident in seven days, following the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, who was killed by an ICE agent during a chase in Houston, Texas, the previous week.
Australian news outlets, including SBS News Australia and the Sydney Morning Herald, have reconstructed the scene based on eyewitness accounts. One witness, Lucas Scott, cited by the Portland Press Herald and reported by the Australian press, described the driver as attempting to strike the ICE agent before the agent opened fire, saying, "He fired about four shots at him." Another witness, 71-year-old Daniel Boucher, told AFP that he heard "a lot of pop, pop, pop" before seeing agents forcibly remove a person with a bloodied face from a white car, reporting that he heard the victim say, "I tried to stop."
The Maine Attorney General's office has confirmed that it is investigating the use of lethal force, stating that initial evidence suggests the man attempted to flee by driving his vehicle towards the agent. The agent has been placed on administrative leave, in accordance with protocol following a police-involved shooting, while the FBI has launched its own investigation. However, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had not provided any public comment eight hours after the incident, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
The Australian press is also reporting on the reaction of Maine's independent Senator Angus King, who is close to the Democrats, and who claims to have secured a promise from DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin for a "full and transparent" investigation, while acknowledging, "It's a tragedy every time there's a loss of life. We don't know the circumstances at this stage." Australian media outlets are highlighting that this series of fatal shootings may fuel criticism of Donald Trump's mass deportation policy, for which ICE is the enforcement arm on US soil.
The Australian government's focus is on local eyewitness accounts, with a strong emphasis on the stories of residents like Daniel Boucher and Lucas Scott, rather than official statements from ICE.
Australia's media outlets tend to favor Democratic sources, quoting the reaction of Senator Angus King without providing a Republican counterpoint or a response from the Trump administration.
The Australian press has limited coverage of the Mexican judicial follow-up, with Australian articles not mentioning the criminal proceedings initiated by Mexico regarding the death of its citizens
