ANALYSIS
Helsinki, October 16, 2026. For YLE, MTV Uutiset, and Iltalehti, the matter boils down to a sudden fall: Katie Zacharia, appointed White House spokesperson, left the post on Friday, just five days after taking office. YLE reports that the White House confirmed her departure, the New York Times speaks of a dismissal on Friday, and CNN and Fox News, citing official sources, say the same. The YLE text cites its source: "Lähde: AP, Reuters".
The Finnish thread is the question of title. MTV Uutiset looks back on the first press point and the subsequent controversy. On Thursday, Zacharia admitted to not having passed the bar exam during an interview with Sean Hannity of Fox News. Asked about her law degree from Pepperdine in California, she replied "näin on" ("that's right"); when asked if she had retaken the exam, she replied "en" ("no"). MTV recalls that a law degree is not enough in itself to practice as a lawyer in the United States. The site also notes that Donald Trump introduced her as a lawyer on October 9 and that she had described herself as such on social media. Hannity asked her if she was authorized to call herself "lawyer" rather than "attorney".
The president's version is reported accurately. According to YLE, Trump told journalists on Friday that the press had treated her "erittäin epäoikeudenmukaisesti" ("very unfairly") and that he had advised her to reconsider her position. He added: "Ehkä lehdistösihteerin työ ei ole Zachariaa varten" ("This job may not be for Zacharia"), and then told Fox News he was not in a hurry to appoint a successor. Iltalehti quotes his question: "Katie, tarvitsetko sinä tätä?" and specifies that Zacharia is 42 years old.
Iltalehti puts the episode into the series of spokespersons: in August, the departure of Karoline Leavitt had been explained by Trump as a desire to spend more time with her family, with her becoming an influential external advisor before the midterm elections. The 14-minute press point, the Ukrainian question about intelligence, and Beijing's response to the toilet issue do not appear in the articles of this pool: Finnish coverage remains focused on the person's credibility and the presidential management of the episode.
