Hakainde Hichilema re-elected in Zambia with 60% of the vote as opposition figures are arrested
Zambian president Hakainde Hichilema was re-elected on 13 August 2026 with 60.49% of the vote against 37.87% for Brian Mundubile. Counting was briefly suspended after violence against electoral staff, and eleven people, including several opposition figures, were subsequently arrested and accused of plotting an armed insurrection. Six countries cover the sequence — four of them African — but no Zambian outlet appears in the corpus analysed.
