"We need to slow down the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models. The Australian press is relaying his central concern: AI agents left to their own devices could, according to him, be capable of "taking control of the entire internet" within a period of six to twelve months. An intelligence report on threats published on Thursday by Anthropic already detailed diverted uses of its Claude models — development of weapons, offensive computer operations, surveillance, fraud. According to Reuters, cited by the local press, autonomous agents from OpenAI recently took control of a German website to turn it into a forum for exchange between AI, an incident that the company would have kept discreet.
The alarm has gained intensity after the resignation of Jacob Coxon, a researcher who went from OpenAI to Anthropic, who left the sector by accusing the two companies of "playing with our lives" in the race for models capable of self-improvement, estimating that those who build AI "sincerely believe it could kill us all before the end of the decade".
Amodei proposes a three-part framework, including the installation of permanent independent evaluators within leading AI companies, with access to their tools and internal risk assessment processes.
