On Saturday, Dario Amodei, head of Anthropic, published a text on X calling on artificial intelligence companies to slow down the development of their models' capabilities. The Russian press is picking up the alert with an unusual level of technical detail for this type of Californian op-ed.
According to Meduza, Amodei fears that, given the accelerated pace of AI capabilities, a swarm of autonomous agents could, within six to twelve months, "take control of the entire internet thanks to a permanently active botnet", with damage potentially amounting to "hundreds of billions of dollars". Vedomosti cites the same diagnosis: summer 2026 saw a marked acceleration, driven by the growing ability of AI to design new generations of systems - a dynamic that Amodei calls "recursive self-improvement" and says he observes "across the entire sector, including at Anthropic".
To mitigate this risk, the head of Anthropic proposes a three-step coordination. First, that sector companies accept independent audits of their internal security practices. Next, coordination between AI companies in democratic countries. Finally - a detail that the Russian press is particularly keen on - global coordination involving governments, "including both democratic countries and authoritarian regimes, such as China", reports Meduza.
Vedomosti notes the immediate support of two of Anthropic's rivals. Elon Musk commented on X: "Dario is right." Sam Altman, head of OpenAI, confirmed during a closed meeting with his teams that the issue "has been one of the main topics of discussion at OpenAI in recent weeks", and said he is willing to slow down the development of his most advanced systems, hoping that other major companies will follow.
Vedomosti also mentions an open letter published by Fields Medal winners on the Math and AI movement's website, warning that the mathematical capabilities of large language models have recently increased to the point of solving unsolved problems in several fields - a competition on benchmarks deemed harmful to the mathematical community. None of the three articles mention an official Russian reaction or a national regulation project in response to this call.
