On Friday, the president announced that he would ban CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House grounds due to coverage he deemed "fake news"; the accreditation of their journalists was deactivated as of Saturday. On Monday, the three media outlets notified the administration that they would be filing a complaint with the federal court of the District of Columbia, citing the First Amendment. "Without notice or procedure, the White House revoked the accreditation of our journalists because it opposed their work. If left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public's right to independent information," they wrote in a joint statement cited by CBC News, which notes that emergency hearings could be held as early as this week.

On Monday morning, CNN was also removed from its rotation in the presidential pool at the very moment the network was supposed to provide coverage. In a show of solidarity, ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC joined CNN in suspending this collective coverage: "The public interest demands accurate and independent information about its government. No administration should sanction a media outlet because it disputes its reporting," the five networks said, as cited by the National Post, which describes the situation as an "extraordinary revolt." The concrete consequence is that the inauguration of the White House heliport and Trump's trip to the UN General Assembly — where Xi Jinping is also expected in Washington — took place without live broadcast.

The Toronto Sun retraces the origin of the measure: the exclusion allegedly occurred after advisor Natalie Harp showed Trump critical reports from the three targeted media outlets. The newspaper recalls a precedent, that of the Associated Press, which was banned last year after refusing to rename the Gulf of Mexico, a judicial dispute that is still ongoing. The White House also launched "Trump TV" on Monday evening, a continuous platform featuring announcements and selected moments from the administration. On social media, Trump denied targeting "the free press", instead aiming at what he calls "FAKE NEWS": "corrupt, self-serving, fully coordinated, and totally out of control. It's a threat to our national security," he wrote, according to CBC News, which notes that the White House did not respond to requests for comment.
