Paris, July 3, 2026. The night of July 1-2 will be remembered as one of the deadliest in Kiev since the Russian invasion of 2022. Russian missiles and drones struck the Ukrainian capital in multiple waves over more than eleven hours, killing at least 25 people and injuring 85, including two children, according to France Info. Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the attack as "the worst since the start of the war".
The Ukrainian air force reported 74 missiles and 496 drones were launched that night. The air defense system intercepted 476 drones and 48 missiles. Five districts of the capital were hit, according to the regional military administration. Entire sections of residential buildings collapsed; tens of thousands of residents sought refuge in the metro, underground parking lots, and basements, under an air alert lasting over eleven hours.
The violence of the strikes left deep scars in residential neighborhoods. Journalists from AFP on the scene heard several series of explosions. Sabina Mambetova, 32, whose apartment was destroyed, described to AFP a "real nightmare": "There were three strikes here. Half of the building is destroyed, the roof is gone." Rescue workers were searching for survivors under the rubble. Mayor Klitschko declared a day of mourning for Friday, July 3.
Zelensky had anticipated the attack. From Dublin, where he was attending the launch of Ireland's EU presidency, he announced Wednesday evening that he would return to Kiev urgently: "We know that Putin has been preparing this massive strike for some time." On the scene of the bombings on Thursday morning, he stated that "Russia is targeting civilian targets solely to force Ukraine to abandon its state" and promised a response.
Moscow framed the offensive as a response to recent Ukrainian strikes on its infrastructure. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have targeted "military industry enterprises and energy sites".
On the diplomatic front, Ukrainian authorities are calling on their allies for additional air defense systems. EU spokesperson Anitta Hipper noted that debris had hit a building housing diplomats. The European Union is also set to propose new sanctions against Russia, according to HuffPost France.
From Paris, the French government is closely monitoring the situation, concerned about the escalation of violence in Ukraine.
Ukraine-centered framing: the casualty reports and statements come almost exclusively from Ukrainian authorities (mayor, military administration, Zelensky), without independent verification.
Preference for AFP dispatches: the testimonies rely largely on AFP journalists embedded in Kiev, limiting the diversity of perspectives on the ground.
Limited coverage of allies' reactions: the official positions of France, Germany, or the United States in response to this attack are absent from the analyzed French articles.
