MASSIVE RUSSIAN STRIKE ON KYIV: AT LEAST 11 DEAD UNDER MISSILES AND DRONES
Rome is assessing the extent of the disaster in Kyiv: 496 drones and 74 missiles in one night, at least 21 dead — a toll that the Italian press describes as the worst Russian attack on the capital since the start of the war.

Rome, July 3, 2026. Italy has been closely following the Russian attack on Kyiv in the night of July 2-3, with intense coverage. The Italian government describes the scene as "columns of black smoke rising to obscure the sky," framing it as a "Dantesque circle" - a metaphor that conveys the magnitude of the shock in the face of this night of death and destruction.
The numbers compiled by Italian news agencies give an idea of the scale of the assault. Russia launched 496 drones and 74 missiles on the Ukrainian capital, unleashing unprecedented firepower. At least 21 people were killed and 85 injured, including two children. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, and Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed these numbers, specifying that damage was reported in over 30 sites across all districts of the city.
From Italy's perspective, the attack has been widely condemned. Ukrainian President Zelensky, who returned urgently from Dublin after being warned of the imminent attack, reacted unequivocally: "We will certainly respond." Even before the bombing, he had warned that Moscow was preparing "a new large-scale aggression." 52,000 people, including 4,500 children, took refuge in metro stations - a record since the start of the conflict. Images of tents set up in underground corridors, of mothers holding their sleeping children, have circulated in the Italian press.
Beyond the human toll, the Italian press highlights the symbolic dimension of the destruction. A Red Cross warehouse was destroyed, annihilating two million euros in humanitarian aid. Some 800,000 books were burned. Residential buildings were razed, a downtown hotel damaged. Mayor Klitschko described the attack as "the worst Russian bombing of the capital since the start of the war."
Italian news agency Adnkronos places the event in the context of a conflict approaching four and a half years. A study by the CSIS in Washington estimates that the total number of soldiers killed or injured since February 2022 exceeds two million - including 1.4 million on the Russian side, among them 450,000 killed, four times the US losses during World War II. Ukraine is estimated to have lost between 525,000 and 625,000 men. On the ground, Russian forces are almost three times more numerous than Ukrainian forces on the front line.
This numerical context reinforces the Italian reading of the July 2 attack: not as an isolated event, but as an additional peak in a war of attrition whose total human cost remains difficult to grasp.
Humanitarian-focused framing: a marked emphasis on civilian casualties, children, and symbolic destruction (books, Red Cross)
Preference for a dramatic tone: Italian media outlets use metaphors with a strong emotional charge (Dantean circle, inferno) rather than a neutral tone
Limited coverage of diplomatic reactions: the attack is treated in its immediate dimension without analysis of the responses from Ukraine's European partners
