ANALYSIS
Lisbon, October 3, 2026. The Portuguese press is treating the deployment of a third US aircraft carrier as a military signal, and is questioning it: preparation for a resumption of strikes or mere pressure?
RTP Notícias is reporting the information from the Associated Press agency: the United States has sent around 9,000 troops to the Middle East, on board a group of ships, according to an American official. The convoy includes over 7,000 sailors and 2,000 marines. It comprises the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier group, accompanied by the USS Chosin cruiser, and the USS Makin Island amphibious group, with the USS John P. Murtha and USS Anchorage ships. This could mean three aircraft carriers in the region by the end of October, according to an anonymous American source cited by the agency.
According to RTP, this reinforcement would bring the US naval presence to an "invulgarmente elevado" level: over 20,000 sailors and marines, as well as hundreds of aircraft. The channel recalls that Donald Trump had promised his fellow citizens a campaign of a few weeks and that he is now maintaining an escalation after the midterm elections as a viable option. It sees a war with a rapid dynamic, whose nature becomes more complex as the election approaches.
Executive Digest, on the SAPO portal, details the calendar. The Roosevelt left San Diego and is expected to reach the region during the first half of November, a date that is still indicative. It could replace one of the two aircraft carriers already present, the Washington or the Bush, or the three ships could stay, which would bring the US device to over 50,000 men. The Makin Island amphibious group, with around 4,000 Marines, is to join the Boxer group, of comparable size.
The SAPO title asks the central question: "preparação militar ou pressão sobre o Irão?" (military preparation or pressure on Iran?). The text admits both readings: a reinforcement linked to a new offensive against Tehran after the midterm elections, or a maneuver aimed at increasing pressure without any decision to resume attacks having been taken. It also mentions options on the table, including large-scale strikes against Iranian military targets and the extension of the air campaign.
The two articles remain focused on the military device and the American electoral calendar. Neither of them, in the available passages, develops the diplomatic or economic aspects of the case.
