BIASES AND FRAMING IDENTIFIED

Canada's news outlets have duplicated a family framing: two separate media outlets published the same story about the Patel family with identical quotes, suggesting a shared dispatch rather than independent reporting.

« We want to give a lot of hope. But with each passing day, it’s just getting chipped away, and time is of the essence »

Canada's media coverage of non-Canadian missing persons has been limited: the overall toll in Nepal was summarized in a single sentence before the article shifted focus back to a Canadian family's case.

« The flooding on Aug. 26 killed more than 1,100 people and left roughly 4,400 missing, after a glacier collapsed in the Himalayan border region between Nepal and China. »

Canada's government data is presented as the sole source: the number of missing Canadians relies entirely on the minister's statement, without independently verified numbers from the field.

« Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has said 30 Canadians and permanent residents are among the missing — a number that may change as the government gets more information. »
