BIASES AND FRAMING IDENTIFIED

Community and religious framing: Malaysian coverage features a report on a Hindu prayer vigil in Kuala Lumpur, refocusing the narrative on its own citizens rather than the extent of the Nepalese disaster.

« More than 50 devotees gathered at a Bangsar temple to pray for the safe return of 55 Malaysians missing after devastating floods in Nepal and Tibet. »

Reliance on AFP dispatch: the Nepalese and Tibetan toll is reproduced almost verbatim from two successive dispatches a day apart, without independent Malaysian reporting on the ground.

« Nepal said 1,050 bodies had been recovered by Tuesday, while 3,916 people remained missing. China’s state media reported 16 dead and 546 missing. That takes the overall number of reported dead to 1,066 and missing to 4,462. »
