WHERE THIS COUNTRY STANDS

External perspective, without nationals at stake

Without nationals directly threatened by the disaster, these countries' coverage is taking a step back: the French and German presses are detailing the contrast between Nepal's transparency and Tibet's opacity, the South African press is questioning the sharing of glacial information upstream of the flood, and the Brazilian press is prioritizing the human story of the rescuers and the verification of an AI-generated video.

BIASES AND FRAMING IDENTIFIED

South Africa's government is monitoring the situation, where the dominant narrative between China and Nepal focuses on the sharing of information between Beijing and Kathmandu before the disaster, through the voice of a Nepalese hydrologist.

« What we wanted from them, and still want, is if there are early movements of glaciers and early movements around that area, we would want to know a bit early »

South African officials note that international news outlets have picked up on the story, with two major titles publishing nearly identical content provided by Reuters on Nepal-China exchanges.

« China’s embassy in Nepal said in a statement on X on Saturday that Beijing and Kathmandu had kept in close contact on the issue and had made “substantial progress” »

In South Africa's capital, Pretoria, the voices of Tibetan exiles have been largely overlooked, with their sole cited intervention being a brief statement, while Chinese positions are developed over several paragraphs.

« called for China to disclose “complete and verifiable information about the damage and casualties” »
