RUSSIA STRIKES UKRAINE WITH MISSILES AND DRONES: DEAD AND WOUNDED
Moscow attributes the responsibility for the escalation to Kyiv, defending its strikes as targeting Ukraine's military industry while highlighting its own civilian losses.
Dominant angle identified — does not reflect unanimity of this country’s media
Moscow, July 12, 2026. As agencies report a new wave of Russian strikes that have killed and injured dozens in Ukraine, the dominant narrative in Russia is one of a proportionate response to ongoing Ukrainian aggression against Russian territory and civilians.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, cited by Meduza, the targets of the attack carried out on the night of July 10-11 against Kyiv were "military industry enterprises" involved in the production of drones. Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, reported 10 injured, including one child. The Ukrainian air force claims that six Iskander missiles, four guided Kh-59/69 missiles, and two Kh-31 anti-radar missiles were fired that night, with only two out of 12 intercepted - a sign, according to Russian media, of the depletion of Ukrainian air defense stocks.
The Moscow Times confirms an expanded toll of two dead and 19 injured across the country, including 11 in Kyiv, two in Odessa, and seven in Kharkiv, attributing these losses to a critical shortage of Patriot munitions on the Ukrainian side.
Diplomatically, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova presents a different tally: 38 Russian civilians killed, including one child, and 270 injured in a week of Ukrainian attacks. She accuses Kyiv of trying to "demonstrate to Western curators the effectiveness of the provided arms" to secure more military aid.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov justifies the expansion of the "buffer zone" in eastern Ukraine as a direct response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian soil, ruling out immediate negotiations: "The more Kyiv tries to escalate, the more we will expand this security zone." Vladimir Putin had described this territory as "historically Russian." Sources close to the Kremlin, cited by Reuters, mention a presidential refusal to accept a ceasefire requested by his advisors, and a "high probability" of escalation in the coming months.
In the Kherson region, Governor Vladimir Saldo reports four civilians injured in 24 hours during Ukrainian drone attacks, and 426 localities left without electricity.
Framing centered on official sources: accounts and motivations primarily come from the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Kremlin, and the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Preference for symmetric loss reporting: systematic highlighting of Russian civilian casualties in response to Russian strikes in Ukraine.
Limited coverage of Western condemnations: little attention given to international reactions to strikes against Kyiv, Odessa, and Kharkiv.
