ANALYSIS
Islamabad, October 19, 2026. Pakistani media are treating the information as a development in politics between major powers, largely picking up on the news from agencies and the Wall Street Journal. Business Recorder, citing Reuters, reports that Vladimir Putin has proposed a summit next month with Donald Trump and Xi Jinping to negotiate the end of a four-year-old conflict, in terms that, according to the American daily, would favor Moscow.
The business newspaper specifies, according to a former Russian intelligence officer cited by the WSJ, that the idea was put forward during a phone call with Trump on October 9, which also resulted in an agreement to purchase Russian diesel. It links the proposal to the warming of relations between Washington and Moscow, after the signing on Friday of a decree lifting key sanctions against Russia. The Kremlin is said to have suggested holding the meeting on the sidelines of the APEC summit, scheduled for November 18 and 19 in Shenzhen.
Daily Times focuses on Moscow's reaction on Monday. Spokesman Dmitri Peskov confirmed that the idea had emerged in discussions, while emphasizing that no formal proposal had followed and that the format, agenda, and content had not been settled. He added that Russia appreciated American mediation efforts and that Ukraine should participate in any final settlement, which would require someone in Kiev willing to take responsibility. According to the newspaper, Moscow and Kiev remain far apart on the terms of a peace agreement.
The Ukrainian voice is present but brief: Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha estimated that a meeting involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States could hasten the end of the war, while a Russia-China-US meeting could encourage Putin to continue it. Business Recorder notes that a senior American official indicated that Trump had not accepted the summit, but could be receptive to it.
The framing is primarily procedural and diplomatic: who meets whom, where, and when, with China as a potential host. The consequences for Europe, Ukraine's security, or sanctions are mentioned without being developed, and no direct Pakistani angle appears in the two articles.
