ANALYSIS
Brasília, October 7, 2026. The Brazilian press, through the Folha de S.Paulo and its aggregator UOL, marks the three years of the October 7th by a long account of memory and trauma, rather than a report of ceremonies or electoral campaign.
The main text, titled "After 3 years, October 7th mobilizes memory, politics and fears of Jews in Israel", recalls the extent of the attack. Thousands of armed men from Hamas and other Palestinian factions crossed the Gaza border and struck locations up to 22 km from it. The group, which the Folha describes as "terrorist", fired around 5,000 rockets. Its military leader, Mohammad Deif, called on Palestinians around the world to fight: "This is the day of the greatest battle to put an end to the last occupation on Earth".
The retained toll is 1,200 dead, civilians and members of the security forces, Israelis and foreigners, surprised at home in kibbutzim, on roads or at the Nova electronic music festival, near the kibbutz of Re'im, where 351 people were killed. The newspaper emphasizes that a Brazilian, Ranani Glazer, is among the victims. It also cites reports, including that of the United Nations in June 2024 and that of an Israeli commission, which describe tortures, desecrations of corpses and sexual violence against women, as well as the fate of the 251 hostages taken to Gaza.
A second article, published on October 6, deals with the intimate aftermath of the drama. Since October 7, 2023, post-mortem sperm collection has been successfully performed on at least 250 soldiers and 21 civilians in Israel, according to the Folha. A mother, Sharon Eizenkot, tells how she signed the form handed over by officers after the death of her son Maor, 19, killed in Gaza on December 8, 2023: "My world was shattered". The practice, once reserved for widows, is now open to parents, and an ethical debate is underway.
The articles provided do not detail the Palestinian toll in Gaza, nor the legislative campaign of October 27, nor the controversy over the investigation commission: the prism is that of Israeli mourning, seen through the political and social angle of collective memory.
