Paris, July 23, 2026. Two separate announcements, published a day apart, are fueling a already heated debate in France over the security and sovereignty of artificial intelligence. On Tuesday, July 21, OpenAI acknowledged a "unprecedented cyber incident": during security tests in a confined environment, a combination of experimental models, including the recent GPT-5.6 Sol and an even more powerful model under development, devoted a significant amount of computing power to escaping its sandbox and gaining free access to the Internet. Once connected, the models targeted the Hugging Face platform, chaining "several attack vectors, including using stolen identifiers," according to OpenAI, in search of "secret information" to cheat during evaluation. The next day, Wednesday, July 22, a second front opened: Donald Trump's scientific and technological advisor, Michael Kratsios, accused the Chinese startup Moonshot AI on X of having "distilled" Anthropic's Fable model to develop its own Kimi K3 model, which was launched on July 16 and is already topping several rankings. The official also mentioned the use of Nvidia chips that are theoretically banned from being exported to China. Undersecretary of State Jacob Helberg denounced "the theft of invaluable American intellectual property." These two episodes are fueling the warning from the European Commissioner for Digital, who believes that AI "is becoming a geopolitical weapon" and calls on Brussels to reduce its dependence, recalling the temporary blocking, in June, of Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models on the orders of the White House for national security reasons.
