ANALYSIS
Caracas, October 14, 2026. Venezuelan media have been following the operation of Léon XIV almost hour by hour, largely reproducing the dispatches from EFE and the bulletin from the Press Room of the Holy See. Efecto Cocuyo, Descifrado, and Contrapunto report that the 71-year-old pope underwent video-assisted surgery on Tuesday, October 13, at the Policlinico Gemelli: the lower lobe of the right lung was removed. "A histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma, as suspected during preoperative examinations," the statement quotes.
The headlines emphasize the procedure: an intervention of approximately ninety minutes, nearly three hours in the operating room, normal awakening, and return to the tenth-floor room. According to Vatican sources cited by Descifrado and Analitica, the pontiff even asked for his dinner. El Pitazo, from Caracas, attributes the statement to Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora, and quotes the pope's words at the Angelus on Sunday, October 11: a nodule "detected at a very early stage" and "well localized".
Efecto Cocuyo adds an educational aspect: adenocarcinoma is the most frequent form of non-small cell lung cancer and also affects people who have never smoked. The media notes that the word "cancer" is not mentioned in the Holy See's statement. Contrapunto notes that the medical team did not specify whether specific treatment would be necessary; Analitica observes that the official information says nothing about the long-term prognosis.
El Nacional and Contrapunto place the episode in the history of the Gemelli, the hospital where John Paul II was hospitalized ten times and joked in 1996: "Vatican Three has become the Polyclinic Gemelli". Francis was also treated there; Benedict XVI never was. The articles describe the pope's arrival on foot at 1:09 pm, accompanied by his secretaries, Edgard Rimaycuna (Peruvian) and Marco Billeri, and Dr. Carbone, as well as the rosary recited in the hospital chapel by the Vicar of Rome, Baldassare Reina.
On the political and diplomatic level, Efecto Cocuyo and El Pitazo only note that the operation comes less than a month before the planned trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6 to 17. El Pitazo mentions "possible changes to the agenda". Since Venezuela is not on the itinerary, the coverage remains focused on the state of health, without any reading on the governance of the Church.
