ANALYSIS
Mexico, October 26, 2026. The Mexican press is treating María Corina Machado's return as a test of the Venezuelan transition. On Sunday, October 25, the opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner announced on X: "Estoy aquí, con ustedes." According to El Financiero, which reprinted a Bloomberg dispatch, she returned "sorpresivamente" to Caracas, without specifying how she entered the country or where she was.
Reforma reports that her first public appearance was at the Santa Rosa church in the state of Lara, where she thanked the Divina Pastora for her return after ten months abroad. It was former candidate Edmundo González who confirmed her arrival on his X account. The newspaper mentions "casi un año" of absence, while the agency mentions "diez meses."
El Financiero emphasizes the dilemma of interim president Delcy Rodríguez. Her government has already allowed the return of exiled politicians, activists, and journalists, including those close to Machado. Allowing her to organize and campaign freely would be the most significant expansion of this opening. Arresting her or limiting her activities, on the other hand, would increase pressure on Washington to react. A Venezuelan Ministry of Information official did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The newspaper also recalls that Machado thanked Donald Trump and Marco Rubio, highlighting her ties to Washington, even if her return threatens to complicate the American strategy after Nicolás Maduro's arrest. It cites an AtlasIntel poll for Bloomberg News: 61% of favorable opinions for Machado, and 52% against 19% for Rodríguez in a hypothetical presidential election.
On the American side, Reforma and El Norte, which published the same AFP dispatch, reported Marco Rubio's statement. According to him, Machado's return is the "resultado directo" of the "reconciliación" process led in a dialogue table supported by the United States. The Mexican coverage remains factual and focused on the balance of power between the opposition leader and the interim president, without editorials on the legitimacy of the American intervention in January.
