ANALYSIS
Berlin, October 26, 2026. For the Tagesschau, Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado has returned to Venezuela about ten months after her clandestine departure. "Ich bin hier. Bei euch" ("I am here. With you"), she wrote on X. Her ally and former presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia confirmed her arrival: "Today is a very important day for Venezuelans," he said, adding that with her return comes "our sovereign voice" to lead the process. The Handelsblatt reports that Venezuelan media have shown a public appearance by Machado in a church in Barquisimeto, a city in the center of the country, and that González Urrutia also wants to return soon.
The German press emphasizes the journey that preceded her return. The Handelsblatt recalls that she had tried to return at least seven times in recent months, by private plane, regular flight, boat, or land route: flights canceled at the last minute, faulty boats, other failed attempts without explanation. She had left her hiding place in early December 2025 to receive the Nobel Prize in Oslo, after living in hiding for a year and a half due to security forces, and then stayed mainly in the United States and Panama. The Tagesschau adds that she had fled by a perilous boat journey, during which she reportedly broke a vertebra, according to her spokesperson, that she arrived too late for the ceremony, and that her daughter received the prize in her place.
The electoral aspect appears in the intermediate title of the Tagesschau: on Thursday, thousands of people had demanded her return to Venezuela; in Caracas, about 2,000 protesters also called for elections on signs, and others marched in the state of Táchira, on the Colombian border. The context refers to the disputed presidential election of 2024, since which Machado had been living in hiding.
On the diplomatic level, the Tagesschau reports the reading of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio: it was "reconciliation talks" supported by the United States that paved the way for her return. Both texts emphasize that neither Machado nor González Urrutia has given immediate details about her location or the circumstances of her return, which leaves open the conditions of her security and the continuation of the political process.
