Berlin accuses Moscow of sending an explosive drone to Leipzig airport, and imposes sanctions

On 1 September 2026, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt formally accused Russia of directing an attempted attack at Leipzig/Halle airport. A drone carrying an explosive charge had been found there on 4 August, close to Ukrainian cargo aircraft; its detonator failed. Berlin announced sanctions and summoned the Russian ambassador. Moscow calls the accusations "fabricated".

On 1 September 2026, John Ternus, 51, took over as chief executive of Apple, ending Tim Cook's fifteen-year tenure, during which the share price rose by roughly 2,300%. US strikes Hormuz, Iran hits back at Jordan and the Emirates: first exchange of fire in a month

After a month of calm during which Washington had shifted its effort to an economic war, US forces struck missile launchers on an island in the Strait of Hormuz on 31 August 2026. Tehran retaliated against two US bases in Jordan and targets in the United Arab Emirates, which called the attack a dangerous escalation. A tanker was hit by three projectiles in the strait's southern lane and a Saudi supertanker was intercepted. Brent rose to around 91 dollars.

Nepal: 987 bodies recovered in Rasuwa, nearly 900 missing at eleven hydropower sites

A week after the flood triggered by a glacial collapse on the China-Nepal border, Kathmandu announced on 1 September 2026 that 987 bodies had been recovered in Rasuwa district and more than 12,000 people rescued. Nearly 900 remain missing at eleven hydropower sites, including workers trapped in buried tunnels. Prime Minister Balendra Shah attributes the flood to climate change and is seeking help from the Loss and Damage Fund. Death tolls differ, including between Nepali sources.

Iceland rejects resuming EU accession talks, with Reykjavik voting against the rest of the country

On 29 August 2026 Icelanders voted in a referendum on resuming EU accession talks, suspended since 2013. The final figures give 118,040 votes to no against 105,339 to yes — 52.8% against 47.2%, a gap of 12,701 ballots — on the highest turnout since 1944. Yes wins in both Reykjavik constituencies, no passes 60% in the three rural constituencies. The vote does not withdraw the application filed in 2009.

Niger: the junta puts down a mutiny in Niamey with Russian help

On the night of 29-30 August 2026 gunfire and explosions were heard in Niamey, around the airport and the presidency. It was not a coup but a mutiny against the ruling junta: government forces retook base 101, several soldiers were killed and mutineers arrested. Only five national presses covered the episode.

Violence in Ceuta: Spain asks the European Union for help after a month of migration crisis

A month after a record crossing from Morocco, the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has seen a surge of violence since 26 August 2026: groups of residents attacked migrants and tore down camps, a military vehicle was stoned and twelve Moroccan nationals were arrested. Madrid is asking the European Union for help.

Trump announces a deal giving the United States control of 65 billion Venezuelan barrels

On 28 August 2026 Donald Trump announced a deal with Caracas covering, according to both governments, 17 fields with a proven potential of 65 billion barrels and an expected $100 billion in investment. Axios, which had revealed the talks the day before, puts the figure at 90 billion barrels across a dozen fields. The US strategic reserve is at a forty-year low.
