Swedes voted on Sunday, September 13, in a dead heat: the left-wing opposition is projected to win 176 of 349 seats, against 173 for Ulf Kristersson's outgoing majority. The Sweden Democrats fall back for the first time, to around 17.5% of the vote. The final result awaits the count of overseas ballots on September 16. Twenty-one countries, from Oslo to Beijing, read the vote.
At dawn on Sunday a Russian drone hit the locomotive of a passenger train at Yahodyn station, two kilometres from Poland, shortly after a convoy carrying Boris Johnson, a former CIA director and European advisers had passed. The 206 passengers had been evacuated. Kyiv and Warsaw call it an escalation, Moscow a military infrastructure. Ten countries tell the closest strike to NATO territory in months.
On 9 September, Donald Trump promised a $5,000 "dividend" to every American adult if Republicans keep the House and Senate in November's midterm elections, which renew all 435 House seats and 35 of the 100 Senate seats. With around 270 million adults, the cost would exceed a trillion dollars; media outlets recall two similar promises that went unfulfilled, and legal scholars question the lawfulness of a payment conditioned on an election result.
US Central Command destroyed five Iranian oil tankers on 8 September, calling it a response to two ballistic missile attempts against a Navy warship. Iran struck the Al-Azraq base in Jordan, which says it intercepted 18 of 20 missiles, then claimed attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, where one seafarer was killed and another reported missing. Brent crude passed $100 for the first time since July.
A failure in NATS's flight data processing system disrupted UK air traffic on 8 September: more than a thousand flights cancelled, Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Stansted hit, Dublin affected. A further 177 flights were cancelled the next day. Ryanair and Wizz Air are demanding answers; Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander rules out a cyberattack.
On Tuesday evening, 8 September, Donald Trump signed executive orders banning imports of Canadian alcohol, dairy products and motorcycles from 29 September, and adding a 50% surcharge on mattresses, cheeses, paper and aluminium from 15 September. Canadian goods are also excluded from federal procurement contracts. Ottawa had just applied its own duties on about $20 billion of US goods. Mark Carney is urging the country to “pivot”.
On Tuesday 8 September, twelve countries — the United Kingdom, France, Canada and nine European states — said they intend to ban trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, which British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband linked to “ethnic cleansing”. Two hours later Israel ordered the British consulate in East Jerusalem to close, told diplomats to leave and barred twelve Britons from entry. Washington said it would not follow.
The AfD won Sunday's regional election in Saxony-Anhalt with 43.8% of the vote, 23 points more than in 2021, on a record turnout of 77.8%. It takes 39 of the Landtag's 83 seats and falls three short of an absolute majority. Sahra Wagenknecht's BSW scraping in at 5.3% makes both an AfD majority and a cordon-sanitaire coalition of all the other parties impossible at once.
Volkswagen's supervisory board unanimously approved a plan on Thursday 3 September that cuts about 50,000 jobs worldwide by 2030. Four German plants — Emden, Zwickau, Hanover and the Audi site at Neckarsulm — have no guaranteed production after 2031, and the fate of Spain's Seat brand, part of the group for forty years, remains undecided.
Pedro Sánchez told Congress there is "no solid evidence" that Morocco orchestrated the mass arrival of migrants in Ceuta — even as a Spanish report documents that Moroccan gendarmes let people through for some ten hours. His own allies accuse him of lying, protesters fill the streets, and Vox is carrying the affair as far as Chile.
On 1 September 2026, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt formally accused Russia of directing an attempted attack at Leipzig/Halle airport. A drone carrying an explosive charge had been found there on 4 August, close to Ukrainian cargo aircraft; its detonator failed. Berlin announced sanctions and summoned the Russian ambassador. Moscow calls the accusations "fabricated".
