ANALYSIS
Brasília, September 28, 2026. The Brazilian press accurately retraces the sequence of events of the operation carried out on Sunday by the British police near RAF Fairford, in Gloucestershire, an airbase used by the US Air Force, among others, to strike Iranian missile sites targeting navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Five men were arrested in the neighboring hamlet of Whelford, after a call reported around 0:45 three suspicious vans heading towards the airfield. The suspects are suspected of explosives law offenses and preparation of a terrorist act; the anti-terrorist police have taken the lead in the investigation, described as a "serious incident".
According to G1, about 30 emergency vehicles - police cars, ambulances, and fire trucks - as well as a helicopter were mobilized, while an army bomb disposal robot examined three white vans. Several properties were evacuated within a 400-meter security perimeter. The police say they believe the situation is under control, without having communicated the identity or nationality of the five detained men.
The Folha quotes Vicki Evans, national anti-terrorist coordinator: "We are at the initial stages of an investigation, and five men remain in custody [...] we are working closely with our partners to understand the circumstances of the incident." The newspaper also reports the words of Donald Trump, who described the arrest as "fantastic", stating that the suspects planned to cause great damage and had been under surveillance for a long time.
Brazilian newspapers list several leads without definitively prioritizing one: a motivation linked to Iran, considered the most likely according to a source close to the investigation, but also a possible Russian sabotage operation or an action by Islamist extremists. No sponsor is designated at this stage. This restraint - listing hypotheses rather than firmly ranking them - structures the entire Brazilian narrative, calibrated to international dispatches and cautious in the face of a still embryonic file.
