Five men were arrested on Sunday, 27 September, near the Fairford airbase in Gloucestershire, after a local resident alerted the police at 0:45, reporting three suspicious vans heading towards the base. According to the Daily Mail, the woman was returning from an evening out when she saw men of "Middle Eastern appearance, masked" abandoning their vehicles; she warned a local WhatsApp group to lock their doors before calling 999. The suspects were arrested less than twenty-five minutes later, handcuffed and shirtless on the road, a detail that, according to the tabloid, suggests the police feared explosive vests.
Viable incendiary devices and chemicals were found in one of the vans, whose open rear doors revealed large black barrels scattered on the floor, the police said, who detained the men under the Explosives Act and then on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. An army bomb disposal robot inspected the three vehicles and, according to the Daily Mail, security officials deployed military bomb disposal experts and the SAS to neutralize the threat before the counter-terrorism police took over the investigation. RAF Fairford, the command post of the US Air Force in Europe, was used as a base for US strikes against Iranian missile sites targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz; the Revolutionary Guards had warned London in July not to allow US bombers to take off from the site.
The threat level at Fairford was raised to Delta, the maximum, while the Lakenheath base, about 240 kilometres away, remains at level Charlie. According to The Independent, the arrest is not presented as the result of a planned operation: the authorities say they only discovered the project on Sunday night. A precautionary evacuation affected the homes in the neighbouring hamlet before the police deemed the incident under control.
