For the Qatari press, the arrest on Sunday of five men near the British RAF Fairford airbase, used by the American aviation to strike Iranian missile sites targeting the Strait of Hormuz, illustrates a risk that the Gulf is familiar with: any facility lent to Washington in the war against Iran becomes, in fact, a potential target.
According to Gulf Times, the Gloucestershire police received a call around 0:45 am reporting three suspicious vans heading towards the base, in western England. Armed police officers arrested five men, who are now being held under the Explosives Act and on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. A 400-meter security perimeter was set up around the site while an army bomb disposal team examined the vehicles; about 85 homes in the nearby hamlet of Whelford were evacuated to a leisure center, reports Al Jazeera.
The national coordinator for counter-terrorism policing, Vicki Evans, specified that the investigation is in its early stages and that five men remain in custody. However, the Gloucestershire authorities estimate that the incident is now under control. According to a source close to the investigation cited by Gulf Times, the trail of a motive linked to Iran is considered the most likely, without excluding Russian sabotage or an Islamist project — the police having, at this stage, designated no sponsor.
The case cannot be read in Doha without reference to the regional context: Fairford is part of the device that London has authorized for American strikes against Iranian missile sites threatening navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, after the Revolutionary Guards warned, in July, that any used base would become a legitimate target. Now, Qatar itself hosts major American facilities as part of this same commitment against Tehran — a proximity that makes the local press particularly attentive to the vulnerability of these bases, wherever they are located.
American President Donald Trump has described the operation as exceptional, stating that the suspects wanted to cause significant damage. British Defense Minister Wes Streeting, for his part, thanked the emergency teams mobilized, ensuring that the situation was under control.
