ANALYSIS
Mexico, October 18, 2026. The Mexican press covered Saturday, October 17, as a flare-up of urban violence, with details of arrests and damage. La Jornada estimated the mobilization at "unas 800 mil personas" in at least 1,750 marches against the rising cost of living, in support of high school students' demands, with at least 1,200 arrests and 150 police officers injured. The newspaper specified the social context: the anger targets inflation and the deterioration of public services.
El Informador relayed the version of Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu. Just before midnight on Saturday, during a trip to support law enforcement, he mentioned 1,200 people arrested in one day and stated that behind the violence was "a political maneuver that accepts violence". He added that "no nos dejaremos intimidar" and that Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin had asked prosecutors to request provisional detention for "particularly violent and dangerous" profiles. Lecornu said that Parisian "centres of power", including the Élysée, Matignon, and the National Assembly, had been targeted.
The mayors of Paris, Marseille, and Lyon, Emmanuel Grégoire, Benoît Payan, and Grégory Doucet, requested to be received by Lecornu early in the week and demanded "a precise diagnosis" of the chain of events.
The toll worsened as the dispatches came in. El Informador reported around 1,800 national arrests, and Reforma, citing AFP, spoke of more than 2,000 detainees. Images of the burning city hall of Limoges, a 143-year-old building, opened several reports. El Norte and Reforma published the same AFP gallery: looting in France, a fire in front of Milan Cathedral, a camp in Lisbon, tear gas and rubber bullets in Albania, which inscribed the crisis in a European wave.
On Sunday, Reforma reported that the police dispersed several hundred people in the Place de la République in Paris with tear gas and stun grenades during an unauthorized gathering.
Donald Trump's reaction occupied a special place. El Informador quoted his message: "¡Francia está ardiendo!" and his call to close the borders, then contrasted it with the origin of the protests, initially led by students demanding better schools, joined by unions and frustrated citizens.
