ANALYSIS
Caracas, October 18, 2026. The Venezuelan press covers the French violence of Saturday, October 17, from the angle of public order and material damage, based on agency dispatches (AFP, EFE) taken up by El Nacional, Contrapunto, and Efecto Cocuyo.
The count takes center stage. El Nacional reports "at least 1,800 people arrested", according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, including 855 in Paris, a "record" detention reported by the police. Contrapunto mentions a provisional figure of 2,000 arrests and 600 injured police officers, gendarmes, and firefighters. Nuñez attributes the violence to "several thousand far-left individuals", joined by delinquents who looted businesses.
The damage is detailed. The Federation of Commerce and Distribution estimates that 1,500 stores were affected; its president, Alexandre Bompard (Carrefour), speaks of "hundreds of millions of euros" in damages and demands an acceleration of compensation. El Nacional notes that Limoges lost its city hall and quotes Paris Deputy Mayor Lamia El Aaraje, evoking "a level of violence that we had never seen".
The political register remains secondary. Efecto Cocuyo relays Macron's message from Saturday: "no place for violence", promising that troublemakers will be "pursued and punished" and calling for a "united front" against "those who sow chaos". Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu sees "a political maneuver that accepts violence" and obtained from Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin requests for provisional detention. The mayors of Paris, Marseille, and Lyon demand to meet with him for a "precise diagnosis".
Venezuelan sources also highlight the controversy over the security device. Contrapunto indicates that the executive claims to have made the absence of victims its priority, and questions whether this was done to the detriment of the protection of public buildings and businesses. They note a discrepancy in the mobilization: 550,000 demonstrators according to the government, 800,000 according to the organizers, while the ministry had forecast no more than 150,000 until Friday.
Anger over the high cost of living is mentioned as a motive for the day, without being developed. The articles provided do not report the content of the presidential address on Sunday.
