ANALYSIS
Stockholm, October 10, 2026. The Swedish press reports on the announcement made by Donald Trump on Truth Social, Friday, October 9, after an exchange he described as "very successful" with Vladimir Putin. According to him, Russia must immediately deliver 300,000 tonnes of diesel to the American and global markets, then 500,000 tonnes in November and 1,000,000 tonnes thereafter. Expressen and Aftonbladet add 3,000,000 tonnes "subject to the state of Russian refineries". Svenska Dagbladet quotes Trump: thanks to his "total control of the Strait of Ormuz" and this announcement, diesel prices will decrease for Americans and the whole world.
The figures vary from one title to another. Dagens Nyheter headlines with four million tonnes, while Sveriges Radio reports approximately 1.8 million tonnes in the coming months. Svenska Dagbladet, citing Reuters, and Sveriges Radio, citing AFP, relay a temporary license from the US Treasury authorizing this trade. Russian mediator Kirill Dmitriev writes on X that Russian-American cooperation on diesel "will be positive for the world".
It is Volodymyr Zelensky's reaction that structures the coverage. On Telegram and X, he mentions a missile strike against a building in Pryluky and the bombing of Kramatorsk, then judges that Washington shows "weakness rather than strength". He warns that Russia "will thank" with more terror and that allowing Moscow to sell oil products is "an investment in a war that must end, not be prolonged". Sveriges Radio and Aftonbladet repeat this last sentence.
Aftonbladet notes that Trump does not mention the Russian war of aggression or sanctions, and recalls that the G7 decided the previous week to release 100 million barrels of diesel and crude from its reserves. The newspaper also notes that Moscow has been limiting its diesel exports for a few months, after Ukrainian attacks on its refineries. Expressen puts the agreement a few hours after a new Ukrainian attack on the Omsk refinery, and recalls that these strikes, intensified in 2026, irritate Putin as well as Trump.
On the domestic American front, Expressen mentions the criticism against Trump over gasoline prices, which have been rising since the start of the war against Iran, and his delay in the polls, which threatens his majority in Congress. This aspect remains secondary in the Swedish coverage, focused on the effect of the agreement on Ukraine.
